Style and Conventions of Music Videos content

In the music/media industry there's many different ways of presenting the theme. Most music artist have their own type of way of creating a music video to grabbed the audience attention.

Performance music video is the artist actually recording their performance of the music video. Some artist choose to show steps of the music video being recorded or have the background as the music set to add more of an effect to the audience to make them feel that they were there/they're apart of it.

(beyonce- love on top)

The music video 'Love on top' first started being set in the dance studio where they practise the choreography for the music video that they are preparing for but that's what we think when we look at it, whereas that's the way Beyonce had created it to be like that for a reason.
Later in the video (1.44) the set moves into the performance stage where Beyonce to us is properly performing the piece to the audience but that isn't how she styled it to be, instead that's just her still performing the piece but going at it with more enthusiasm.

Concert music video is actual live concert that the artist performed which they have used for their music video, most artist do this to show the audience the concert and because it's much cheaper that way because they're not having to pay out more money to create/film a music video for the song that they have released. Some artist also choose to do it this way because it gets the audience involved especially if they happened to be at that same concert, then they would want to see if they can spot them self in the video.

As-live is a music video where the artist is performing to an audience in the video, whether that be on stage or face to face. Artist choose this style of video to show the audience that they are singing the song to everyone, getting everyone involved so they feel apart of the song/music.

(k ci and jojo- all my life)

In this video the artist is singing this song for a special woman that he likes(1.35), but he also performing the song to the audience that are in the video.

This makes the audience feel and understand the song more because its like the artist is showing them what the song is about/what it means to them because the woman of his dreams is there in crowd with everyone to see.

Narrative is a style of music where the video is telling a story while the artist is singing the lyrics. Most artist choose to do this type of style with them not being in the video at all or they'll only be the extra, but the song will normally focus on one person and tell a story about them.
An artist chooses do this to grab the audience attention especially if the story is creative, because it make you want to know what's going to happen and if it's a sad song then it makes you think about it. With narrative music videos its also memorable because when you hear that song again you will immediately think about the video/story and that's what the artist wants you to do.

TOK- footprints, is an excamplke of a narrative music video, in this video it's about these different type of family going through struggles in their life and how they have to deal with it because they can't turn back time.
The main artist is singing while the cast in the music video are acting out the parts that they are describing.

Interpretative is a video that the story matches the lyrics exactly. For example there's a song about someone left, then in the video there could be a person leaving someone behind. The artist may choose this style so then the audience can easily follow along the video, because it wouldn't confuse them because what is being said is what the person is doing.

In this music video 'same girl' by usher and r kelly, is an example of an interpretatiuve music video. The lyrics does slightly match the video, at 1.01-.04 r kelly describes the height of the woman like he likes, and the camera shows the woman in a long shot, so you can see her height.

Impressionist is imagery that matches the mood of the song but not always the lyrics. An artist may choose do use this style to get the audience to feel the music/beat, to ejoy just the music and not focus to much on the lyrics itself.

The world's greatest by r kelly is an example of an impressionist music video.
In the music video r kelly is singing about stadning up and telling who you are. But the imagery in the music video doesn't exactly match up with the lyrics, the title of the song is world's greatest and the imagery is of a boxing ring and the crowd cheering which gives a feeling of power, relief and strong minds to the audience.

Surrealism/abstract is a music video that has surprises, strange elements. The video could be a someone having a dream and your taken into the dream as well so each clip would be something different.
Some artist choose this style because it's different, it makes them stand out from everyone else because their not following which is what you would expect them to do, so in a way they're also surprising you as well as their music video.

Bad romance by Lady Gaga is an example of an surreal/abstract music video. Lady Gaga always puts creativity into her music and in this video there's parts that are surreal, the way that the people look are distraught. 1.16-1.18 Lady Gaga eyes are huge and that's to make herself look differentr and stand out more, 2.41 her body is squeezed in tight and her spine is sticking out and that also can be seen to the audience as distraught.

Animation a music video that is computerised that can make the video look strange and confusing because you wonder how they do it.
Most artist choose this style of video because it's a different style to what you would normally see in a music video, its also a way of getting the audience to remember your video because it was different.

(michael jackson- leave me alone)video

In this music video its an animation of a theme park ride that goes through different levels

This music video is very creative and imaginative that you wouldn't expect something like this to be done.
Having a video created like this makes it memerable because its weird and fun at the same time.

Intertextuality is a video that refers to another type of media. For example a cartoon show may have clip that is exactly the same as what is in a particular film. It gets the audience understanding different media texts.

Parody is a music video that has been created again by someone different (not the artist) and they mock the video as well as they can and they do things very dramatically and just make it look fun, this gets the audience to laugh and find the video/song a joke. It's quite creative for someone to do this because people may think that a certain song is pathetic a complete joke, but instead someone has actually gone out their way to create a parody video.

In this music video there's a group of guys joking around with the song 'the motto' by 'Drake'. The video has been made to make the public laugh and see the enjoyable side of the song that they may so love. They have created it as similar as the original music video as possible.
